Louisiana’s nationally recognized Christmas Tree Recycling program is in full swing for the 20th year. 750,000 Christmas trees have been recycled since 1991 and placed along the fastest-eroding areas of Louisiana’s coast. The trees help protect important wetlands which act as barriers against hurricane surges and provide a rich nursery ground for fisheries. The project creates tree fences which slow wave action, trap sediments and combat erosion.
Christmas trees will be collected in Jefferson and Orleans Parishes January 7th, 8th, & 9th. Although the program is organized by local parishes, it relies heavily on community volunteers. Trees will be placed beginning this Saturday, Jan. 9th and every Saturday throughout January. There is a special need for volunteers with shallow draft boats.
